Students Publish Research Journal

Lee University undergraduate students Jamie Carter, Cameron Sybertz, and Karl Kestel recently edited and published the second volume of the student-produced academic journal Enlightenment: An Interdisciplinary Journal of the Arts and Sciences.

This journal was original planned and produced by history and English majors and is the first Lee University student publication of the research work of other Lee undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Articles for the journal are chosen based on recommendation by department faculty and then subjected to committee review. Thus, the final journal, according to the editors, “represents some of the best original academic research produced by Lee University’s undergraduate students.”

Recent contributions include: “Anabaptist Politics: Pacifism and the Separation of Church and State”; “Mary Wilkins Freeman and the Rights of Women”; “What Monk Thought That Up?”; “Leadership in a Moment of Peril: Winston Churchill and the Blitz”; “Personality and Depression: Effect of Personality Type on Depression for Freshman Females”; and “Bellum Justum and Jihad: Concepts of Holy War in the Qur’an and The Song of Roland”.

Lee University Professor of history Dr. Robert Barnett said that a student-produced scholarly journal such as Enlightenment is a remarkable accomplishment. “It shows the high quality of the students in the arts and sciences at Lee,” said Barnett. “Furthermore, it contributes to the scholarly debate in several important areas and also will be a tremendous asset for the student contributors and editors as they move on to graduate programs and various careers.”

Funds to produce the journal were provided by the Student Activities/Events Committee.

Copies of the journal are available in the Lee University History and Political Science Department, and those interested should contact Dr. Jason Ward, assistant professor of history, at 614-8353, or the department secretary, Linda Ray, at 614-8137.
